Customization Options
- Mix up the protein: Swap the TPP for TVP or freeze-dried beans.
- Add smoked paprika for a little more flavor.
- Don't want to bring a bouillon cube? Substitute it for 1/4 tsp salt, and increase the garlic and onion powder to 3/4 tsp.
- If you don't have freeze-dried peas, replace with additional soup mix.
Why TPP vs TVP?
Both are fantastic backpacking protein sources, I like to mix up consuming soy (Textured Vegetable Protein) and pea protein (Textured Pea Protein). TPP also has a larger crumb texture so sometimes that can be preferred in certain dishes. TVP is much easier to find and sometimes cheaper, so there are pros and cons to using both but either one is great to use!
Why Use Dried Soup Mix?
Dried soup mix can be a great vegetable and flavor source for backpacking food! It's lightweight, hydrates quickly, and adds a variety of vegetables and savory depth to a meal without needing to carry fresh produce. Most co-op grocery stores sell it in their bulk food section. I use one from PCC markets that contains carrots, dehydrated onion, potatoes, tomato flakes, celery flakes, bell peppers, parsley and green beans. Whatever mix you use make sure it doesn't contain dried beans, lentils or rice. They will not rehydrate by just sitting in water, they require simmering for a very long amount of time. Freeze-dried beans, lentils or rice work great.
